The State of Himachal Pradesh is situated in the Trans-Himalayan and Himalayan Biogeographic Zones. These zones comprise of three Biotic Provinces namely Trans Himalaya -“ Ladakh Mountains (1A), Trans Himalaya -“ Tibet Plateau (1B), North-West Himalaya (2A) and West Himalaya (2B) as per classification of biogeographic zones of India by Rodgers et al., (2000). Presence of the Shiwaliks, Western Himalayas and Trans-Himalayan region has blessed the State with diverse ecosystems that are an abode of a rich biodiversity. Forest cover of the State has been assessed to be 15443 sq.km which is 27.73 per cent of the total geographic area. The recorded forest area that are legally classified are spread over an area of 37948 sq.km accounting for 68.16 per cent of the geographic area of the State. Diversity of forest ecosystem is exemplified by the presence of 8 forest types and 37 forest sub-types as per classification of forest by Champion and Seth (1968). Himalayan Moist Temperate forest (Group 12) occupies the largest area among all the forest types.
